Welcome everyone to our discussion of John Ortberg's, "The Me I Want to Be: Becoming God's Best Version of You".
I know that many of you could easily plow through this whole book in several hours. I suggest we take it in smaller chapters over the course of the next 6 weeks. For this week, read chapters 1 and 2 which are called "Learn Why God Made You" and "The Me I Don't Want to be". That second chapter's title should grab many of us for there are certainly things inside each of us which we wish we could get rid of - attitudes, actions, regrets, fears, failurse, etc.
I am looking forward to this experience- I look forward to posting but also to reading your posts as well.
For today, you might introduce yourself to the group if you are comfortable doing that. (In any way you wish). Note that you many feel free to participate and post comments "anonmymously" on this site.
Tommorow I will make some comments and ask some questions on chapter 1.

Howdy all! Many if not most of you know me as that bass player Peter uses and while I'm not a member of GSLC, I have been regularly showing up at services for over five years now.
ReplyDeleteI was baptized in April 1953 at the tender age of three and a half (going on four!) and it was a powerful and vivid experience. I first read the Bible (KJV) when I was seven because my Mother finally in desperation said the answers to all the questions I was asking were therein. She was right--the Bible that a seven-year-old's mind can grasp is an amazingly consistent and reliable spiritual foundation.
In 1979 I was led out of Protestant circles into Messianic Judaism, primarily, I believe, because the LORD was reeling in my atheistic Jewish girlfriend (isn't that an oxymoron?). I've been there ever since as has she--she was baptized that same year and we were married there in 1981.
I guess that's enough for now. I'll be around...
Hi--I'm Sue Stief, married to Bill and we have a daughter, Kelly, who just graduated from Magruder H.S. and will head off to Messiah College in Aug. We've been coming to Good Shepherd about once a month in the last year--actually it's when we don't have worship leader duties at Ascension Episcopal church where we have been very active since getting married there 24 yrs. ago. We really enjoy GSLC for the warmth of the people and caring pastors and terrific messages, also the music is great! This book and study really interests me as I'm seeking to grow into a better Christian, and share in a community of other seekers.
ReplyDeleteHi everyone - I'm Anne Crawford, longtime member of Good Shepherd. I sing in the choir, chair (at least for the moment) our Altar Guild and am involved in lots of ministries and other goings on at Good Shepherd. I hail originally from Minnesota but have lived out here in the D.C. area for the past 22+ years. I'm married to Carl - who helps run the sound board for our contemporary service and works part time in the church office. I've found John Ortberg to be a thoughtful writer who is very accesible. Looking forward to exploring this book with all of you over the summer.

ReplyDeleteHi - I am Suzy Mann. I have been at Good Shepherd ever since my husband and I came to this area in 1985. I spend my time serving on the Bell Choir, enjoying Sunday services, working full-time as a software engineer, spending time with my family and gardening. I am also an avid reader. I have never participated in an online book discussion before - this sounds like an excellent book. So am looking forward to this online group.
ReplyDeleteHi-I'm Jud Stailey. It's nice to see so many people I know in this group. I hope to meet a few new people, too. We were members of Good Shepherd for a couple years in the mid '90s, and have been members since our return to the area in 2001. I sing in the choir with Anne, play bells with Suzy, and stay involved in Good Shepherd in an number of other ways. I've read a few chapters of "The Me..." and found it very enlightening. But I have to admit, in the spirit of being open and honest, that one of my reasons for being here is to see how this works. I've very interested is what we can accomplish on line.
ReplyDeleteHi- I'm Deborah Penzak my husband Scott and I have been attending GSLC since Easter and have recently become members. We look forward to meeting all of you and sharing in this book study together.
